i think the images posted will be less directly correlated to the actual day they're captured. i think it'll make it more interesting. btw, i have no desire to be formally trained in creative writing.

My friend Jee Kim has been trying out lifeblog. The daily image and short thoughts is a nice casual dose of content, and the typepad calendar template is a great interface for the format - it's just flexible enough.

What would the Pope do?

John Rocker is making an unlikely comeback attempt with the Long Island Ducks. Rocker never properly apologized for his comments in a 1999 Sports Illustrated article, and his career nosedived among the distractions that followed him to every city he visited. In a weird way I'm excited for his comeback, I would love to see him pitching middle relief for the Yankees.

The co-owner of the Ducks, Frank Bolton, was asked if he had second thoughts about hiring Rocker, who had been recommended to him by Joe Sambito, Rocker's agent and a friend of Bolton's.

"I understood the challenges with John coming here," Bolton said, "but then I was watching the pope on television and thought, 'What would the pope do?' and I thought, he'd give the man a second chance."

Kranepool, Hello.MLBLOGS

If you're a baseball fan, take a look at Kranepool, my mlblogs blog. It's an Baseball-branded version of Typepad. The templates are nice, albeit simple. I like having a place to dump every single once of my baseball thoughts, since I feel a little guilty doing it here.

A few annoyances:

• For my friends to comment, they have to register an mlb.com account. This is totally unreasonable. (Friends! Feel free to gripe here)


• You can't view your traffic or stats


• Your bandwidth quota is .25 GB a month - which is puny. Hello, Typepad goes through that every week.


• It's relatively cheap ($50/yr), but it's still plastered with MLB ads. Unacceptable for a paid service!

I've left some trouble tickets around these issues, lest you think I'm a total whiner. (I'm only a partial whiner.)

Procrastination and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The BBC has just published an interview with Steve Meretzky, who co-authored, with Douglas Adams, the Hitchiker's Guide Infocom adventure.

What was he like?

He was the ideal dinner companion. He could speak intelligently and with wit about almost any topic under the sun. Unfortunately, he was also the world's worst procrastinator! Otherwise, working with him was great.

Most people don't use the word procrastinator precisely enough. I seriously doubt that Douglas Adams was a "dawdler, dilly-dallier, or laggard." In fact I bet he was a little bit like me and most of my friends, where he was always working on something, just not necessarily the most pressing thing.

Ask a certain PHD student I cohabitate with about IMDB sometime.

Google Maps and the New York Subway

Finally, the subway map and Google Maps have been juxtaposed. I found this link while reading Kottke.org. I wonder if this will inspire Google to act faster or allow them to drag their feet while they fry bigger fish. When the Craiglist apartments map was posted, there was a lot of hand wringing about whether or not Google was going to "break it," but in fact they featured it on Code.google.com: "While we have no official API for Maps yet, work like this really is amazing and deserves recognition. Good job Paul!" That's what I like to hear.

Of course, the state holds the best GIS data of all, but their maps offering is so meager it makes me a little sad to pay taxes. This morning I looked up my apartment and then tried to drag the map over to my friend's house. Silly me. By the way, look at all those Open Source GIS projects. What are they, chopped liver?

The "Holy Grail" of NYC GIS Maps, the "NYCMAP" (pronounced "Nice Map") is still not available to the public.

About three years after I started ALLABOUTGEORGE, I met, uh, Jason and another friend of ours, Aaron Hawkins of Uppity-Negro.com, and I saw his name and Jason’s name and I, I got a little jealous. I, um, wanted to be a “negro” too. So “negrophile” is in the dictionary. It’s nice and short, ten letters, and the only people who use it are these really deluded white supremacist types on the Internet and they use it as an adjective or signifier for … all the things they really need in their life.

I heard that Malcolm Gladwell is trying to bring back the word negro too.
