Pokemon cause cancer?!?!
According to a new study appearing in the January 20 Nature, Pokemon was identified as a new cancer gene that may act as a master switch.
"Pokemon is a main switch in the molecular network that leads toward cancer," said senior author Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). "If we could turn Pokemon off, it may block this circuitry and stall the malignant process."
It's hard to believe that cute and friendly pokemon could play such a lethal role in cancer.

If you read the article (or skimmed like me) you would've seen that they were talking about "Pokemon (POK Erythroid Myeloid Ontogenic factor)" not "Pokemon (Pocket Monsters)."

I'm pretty sure the author knows that is a reference to that cancer gene and not the pocket monsters, especially since the author obviously had to read the article to find out this information. Obviously making a joke about the coincidence that a cancer gene has the same name as cuddly (and not so cuddly) video game characters.

But you do supply a valid point - people should read into things a bit more. New cancer gene, not cancer causing video game/ cartoon/ comic book/ card game/ figurine/ whatever other incarnations exsist out there.

If anyone goes to the URL that Arces posted (highlight it, click copy, then right-click paste in the address bar), it clearly states that "The team, led by cancer geneticist Pier Paolo Pandolfi, showed for the first time that the so-called Pokemon gene—which 'shares a name' with a Japanese cartoon popular with children—functions as a proto-oncogene repressing the tumor suppressor ARF."
