Yahoowhacking

Ben Hammersley: Second Sight

Yahoo isn't just back in the game - it's winning. How weird is that?

No way. Hammersley points out feature for feature how Yahoo is "better," but leaves out the one that counts: search and search results.

Ichiro 57

While knuckleheads continue to debate an old fake news story (did he or didn't he do something that wasn't against baseball's rules and wasn't against the law and may or may not have helped his game? .. Got off track, sorry. )

I'm wondering whether or not this fake news story will come true. My money's on Yes.

Hustler of Prose

Souris is a fantastic connector. For the last year or so Souris has been interviewing her friends. It's a great project, and whenever I meet a new person through Souris I can often refer back to their interview on Hustler of Culture. Adriana's interview (Hustler of Prose) is up now.

Literature matters to society not only because it is an expression of the world we live in but also because it forms part of an archive of that world and the perceptions of those who live—and have lived--in it. The literature of my time also fascinates me. I embrace it all: comic books, graphic novels, performance poetry, blogs, etc.

I like the interview, but I wanted to read more about IMDB.

Mocking Me With His Smile

Rockets stop Heat winning streak at 12:

Mutombo was whistled for a technical late in the third quarter after complaining about a foul on O'Neal. After the call, Mutombo held up both arms in disbelief and the Rockets' bench and fans exploded in protest. "He was mocking me with his smile," official Joe Crawford explained to incredulous Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy.

I would love to read a Malcolm Gladwell piece about Blink and sports officiating. I've long believed (and I think it's generally accepted) that 50% of penalties and fouls in sports don't get called, and 50% of the ones that do get called never happened.

We Won!

video thumbnail7:55 PM  Sunday, March 13, 2005 "We win!"

I was shocked but happy that we won the best non-profit/green business web site award at SxSW Interactive this year. Click the thumbnail above to see (hear?) a movie of Finn, Alaina and I freaking out when they call the name of the  fourth annual Media That Matters film festival.

The World In Your Inbox

Every week or so I get an ad for news service promising "The World in Your Inbox." My world is already in my inbox - stop colonizing me! Overused phrases like that (Google returns over 1000 examples of similar campaigns) are the fastest way to get your idea ignored.

Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years

Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years:

Researchers (Hayes, Bloom) have shown it takes about ten years to develop expertise in any of a wide variety of areas, including chess playing, music composition, painting, piano playing, swimming, tennis, and research in neuropsychology and topology. There appear to be no real shortcuts: even Mozart, who was a musical prodigy at age 4, took 13 more years before he began to produce world-class music

One of the things I learned in Mind Wide Open was that "practice makes perfect" isn't just a catchy phrase, it's a neurological fact. I think about this every day, and I've found it challenging to mix practicing the skills in which I've developed proficiency while still trying to learn new things. It's damn hard - the things I know are often boring, and the things I don't know are frustrating. Finding jobs where the work lies right in the middle is almost impossible.

And the Award Goes To...

Goldhelicopter The Golden Helicopter is a special award that is sporadically awarded to those who take a second to post reasoned responses in the face of weblog insanity. Alaina Browne received the first ever Golden Helicopter (in an off-line ceremony) for the chill pill she offered the blogosphere in the wake of the MT 3.0 launch. Today, I am pleased to announce that the second ever Golden Helicopter has been offered to Jason Levine, for his comments in response to the Google toolbar brouhaha. You can read more on his site, over at scripting, and in other discussions too numberous to list.

Welcome

  • Thanks for visiting!
You've reach the personal blog of David Jacobs. I live in New York City, and I'm eating two hamburgers a week on doctor's orders. When you're done with the front page, you can read the archives.
  • You can also read about my company's work on the Apperceptive Blog, and you can keep up with me elsewhere on my reblog, my vox blog, randomWalks or flickr. This should be easier, right?
